From Martin Hudson

I have been spared from bicycling from London to Brighton this year because Lizzie Chellew has offered to do it for me. In addition my eldest son, Hugh, is riding there and back!  My mother-in-law, Audrey Lawson Johnston (with her brother) raised the money for the D Class Lifeboat Amy Lea stationed at New Quay on the Welsh Coast in 2004.  I am now told that this boat needs replacing at the end of 2011 instead of 2014 as I had originally been told.  So there is some urgency in our Appeal. I set out below Lizzie's sponsorship request.

If you do not like internet giving, you could send a cheque made out to the RNLI to me here at 40 Bowling Green Lane, London EC1R 0NE.

Thank you very much indeed

RNLI Appeal – In memory of the RMS Lusitania

I am cycling from London to Brighton on Sunday 20th June 2010 to raise money for a D class Inshore Lifeboat to replace the Amy Lea, which is stationed at New Quay on the Welsh Coast.  This boat should be delivered at the end of 2011 - so far £11000 of the £35000 required has been raised.

I am helping with this particular boat because of a splendid old lady that I use to visit as a child whilst on holiday, the Hon Mrs Audrey Lawson Johnston.  Audrey is now the sole living survivor of the sinking of the Cunard Liner, RMS Lusitania which was torpedoed by a German submarine off Kinsale Head on 7th May 1915

Along with her parents, a brother and twin sisters, Audrey, who at the time was only 3 months old, was coming from New York to settle in Europe.  Unfortunately her twin sisters drowned in the disaster. Audrey was saved by her nineteen year old nursemaid, Alice Lines, who jumped into the cold water with the little baby tied to her with a scarf before being dragged into a nearby lifeboat. In those days it was a twelve hour row from the stricken vessel to the Irish shore.

As you can imagine, Audrey's family have had a long association with the RNLI and she was responsible for raising the money for the Amy Lea, which she named after her mother.  It is now our turn to raise these funds to enable the replacement of the Amy Lea, and we would really appreciate your help.

I hope that you will sponsor me generously, you can do this by just clicking on the justgiving link below:
